Laminated Glass
A special lamintating process is used to create windshields and some high-end door glasses. Two pieces of glass actually make up the windshield with a vinyl layer bonded inbetween. This vinyl layer acts as a safety net which keeps the glass intact during an accident and even helps to cushion your head on impact. Generally speaking most of the glass remains adhered to the vinyl interlayer even in the most extreme cases.
Tempered Glass
Except for a few luxury vehicles, which use laminated door glasses, most door glass and back windows are generally made of tempered glass. Tempered glass is produced by super-heating the glass and then quickly cooling it. The result is a hardened exterior and much more resilient than other auto glass of the same thickness. When a tempered piece of glass is broken, it will break up into tiny cubes of glass. Safety glass is another term used to describe temptered auto glass.
